This morning as I went about my chores I let Pocohontas out of the kidding stall noting that her udder looked bigger than last year and bigger than yesterday. Considering she was a week overdue I felt that was good news. I fed her, noted her ligaments were pretty loose and that udder pretty tight so I stuck her back in the kidding stall making a mental note to check on her after finishing the other chores. Since I spent Saturday tired after checking on her all night Friday-Saturday, I wasn’t getting excited. Maybe just another false alarm. So I went about my chores. An hour later as I passed by the stall I heard little goat kid squeaks in there and was surprised to find two new babies!
Poco had two bucklings and they are strong and both up and nursing shortly after birth. Amanda and I named them Chestnut (the red one) and Black Walnut (black one).
I have to say Poco is a keeper mom, she has easy deliveries and takes good care of her babies. Now back to that giant pile of laundry waiting for me from this weekend…
Amanda loves to ride. At three years old Huey is the only pony I will let her ride “by herself”. Sometimes he leads the way, sometimes she tells him what to
do. Either way, the relationship is working out. Huey seems content to wander around the ring at a walk or trot without breaking much of a sweat.
Last night Longvu Bx Tangueray Texter “Tang” had a “popped” udder and we put her in the kidding stall overnight checking on her a few times. It wasn’t until this morning around 8.30 that she had her babies, one buckling and one doeling. Stay tuned for names.
West View Magnolia gave birth to a 9.8lb doling today. We were expecting more kids based on how big Maggie was, but we are happy with a big health doeling. Introducing Sawyer Farm’s Sequoia!
It turns out Sequoia’s sister from last year, Sawyer Farm’s Diamond, was also born on March 2nd!
This afternoon the kids and I (Anna) decided to try sledding behind King. After some initial testing I decided he didn’t care about the sled behind him and since the kids didn’t have the strength to hold on I tied the ropes to the sled. Probably not the safest venture but the ropes were tied on with very breakable baling twine. The kids had a blast!!! They wore their helmets as did I of course. Next we need some plastic skis and a tow rope…
Precious is our red little pony, well technically chestnut, and we’ve had her for 4 years now. She is in her mid teens somewhere and probably some kind of Quarter pony mix. She has lots of go and has never really been a beginner pony. She loves to trail ride and used to do some barrels. Alex loves this pony. Last fall she started rearing in the ring when asked to trot. Faced with safety issues for the kids we gave her some time off, which didn’t solve the issue. She has had massage and chiropractic adjustment which revealed lower back and pelvic pain, as well as tightness around the withers and chest. She is also fat and out of shape with a significant swayback. So, Precious is going to do some driving and I’m going to do some ground work with her to get her back in shape and lift her back. Alex is going to ride her on walking trail rides.We aquired a harness and cart this past week and have started ground driving. The kids are excited to be working on something new. Vicki wants to get the other ponies driving too. And yes, Precious may just be acting up and be ring sour, but we are going to get her in shape and let me (Anna) ride her some and see if she behaves better. Stay tuned for updates.
This morning I dropped Amanda off at preschool for the first time. As we left the house she noticed her Morning glories had finally started blooming almost as if they had been waiting for this day. She walked in the door at preschool and started playing like she had been there for years. Washed her hands, put away her lunch box and hung up her bag like she had done it a thousand times. Her preschool is the Little Log Preschool in Griswold, a whopping two miles or less from the house. It was recommended to me at the three year old Griswold schools screening, and Amanda will attend two days a week. Full day. I’m feeling a little emotional, but I have to get some work done on the farm, so off we go (Mack and I).
Well I forgot to blog about it on Sunday, but Alex got first place at this year’s pinewood derby race in North Stonington. His car was low profile, blue, weight just right and very fast. According to Alex his car won every single race it entered. Good job Alex!!
Both Sawyer Farm’s Misty and Laughing Duck’s Faith kindled on Tuesday March 26. Misty had 7 kits, and Faith had 9 kits. Add that to Smokey’s litter of 6 and Stormy’s litter of 10 we already had and that’s a lot of baby bunnies…must be spring.
We already have 6 babies reserved out of these litters, so if you want one, let me know soon.
